New Faculty Members
My name is Shinichi Furuyama, and I joined the Department of Community Resource Development as a faculty member on December 1.
My specialty is horticulture in the field of institutional horticulture. D. degree in research on lettuce cultivation in artificially-lit plant factories. After completing my graduate studies, I worked at the Agricultural Experiment Station in Hokkaido, mainly on the cultivation of vegetables in greenhouses before joining Hiroshima University. For example, I was involved in research on heatless cultivation of leafy vegetables in Hokkaido during severe winter, and research on environmental control technology for tomatoes and eggplants (Photo 1). In addition, we have also been involved in activities other than research, such as communicating the technologies created at the test center to the local community (Photo 2) and working together with related organizations to enter the field.

Here I plan to develop new cultivation technology for horticulture facilities by utilizing the artificial light-type plant factory and greenhouses on campus. In the artificial light-type plant factory, we will conduct research on high-speed production and quality improvement of plants by controlling the environment such as temperature and light, and in the greenhouse, we would like to conduct research on cultivation unique to mountainous areas. I look forward to the day when I can conduct research together with you all.
