Aquaponics, which grows fish and vegetables at the same time, was introduced by Professor Koumura, head of the Department of Regional Resource Development, at an agribusiness seminar hosted by the prefectural university. At the Shobara campus, a prototype is being tested with the idea of combining it with an existing plant factory in the future, starting in 2022. The event featured lectures by Mr. Yuji Yamamoto, CEO of Plantform Corporation (Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture), Mr. Koji Sasahara, who is in charge of bioeconomy support in Nagaoka City, and Mr. Koichiro Uemura of Agribusiness Investment & Development Co. The seminar was attended by a full house of participants, even though it was a Sunday. Finally, the participants were given a tour of aquaponics at the Shobara campus, where Dr. Tanigaki explained the situation.
